Jenny's Journey

Story

I am participating in the Memory Walk & Jog – Geelong on Sunday 11th September to help raise money for Alzheimer’s Australia Vic and honour my beautiful mum as we walk for Jenny's Journey.

It has been 12 months since the heartbreaking day that we had to walk away from mum as she entered care in Ocean Grove. It has been a challenging period of our lives and we continue to ride a roller coaster of highs and lows. We try to embrace the precious moments and fight to stay strong through the challenging ones.

The staff at Seaview and mum's carer Jean have become part of our family and together we are making sure that mum has the best quality of life that is possible. There is no question that Alzhiemer's Disease is brutal, younger onset, particularly brutal.

Our goal is to walk and raise awareness until a cure is discovered.

Our Story

Last year we made the heart breaking transition into Aged Care with our beautiful mum at just 59 years old.

Mum was a very successful, intelligent leading teacher at a Secondary School in Melbourne. She loved to travel, to entertain, to garden, to read and to get out for a walk everyday.

In 2007 mum was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She had a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation.

It was in 2008 and 2009 upon returning to work after overcoming her Breast Cancer that mum began making uncharacteristic mistakes and dad began noticing changes in her usual self. Mum spent a lot of 2009 caring for her own mother, who was in the late stages of Alzheimer's Disease.

In 2010 grandma lost her battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Within months of grandma's funeral we received mum's diagnosis;
Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease. She was 54 years old.

Late in 2014, we received another heartbreaking diagnosis, that our father had Motor Neurone Disease. After caring for mum at home for 4 years,  he could no longer provide mum with the care she needed as her needs rapidly increased.

In June, 2015, we transitioned mum into an Aged Care Facility in Ocean Grove. She was devastated.

Whilst she has at time embraced life in Aged Care, she is steadily declining.

Whilst our hearts break at the continual loss of cognitive function and our grief hangs heavy over us, we are motivated and determined to raise awareness and money for the Alzheimer's Association.

Please join us or donate to Jenny's Journey.

Much Love - Jade and Sarah xxx
